DAY 1 — COCHIN AIRPORT → KUMARAKOM
From the airport to the backwaters
Arrival: Cochin International Airport
Meet and greet, followed by a drive to Kumarakom.
Kumarakom is around 94 km from Cochin Airport, and sits on the Vembanad Lake, with backwaters, mangroves, coconut palms and village life.
After check-in
Keep the first day deliberately slow.

Don’t start the holiday by rushing into sightseeing. Start by slowing down.
DAY 2 — KUMARAKOM → VAGAMON
From backwaters to misty hills
After breakfast, check out and drive towards Vagamon.
This is one of the nicest transitions of the itinerary:
waterways → countryside → winding mountain roads → meadows
Vagamon is around 1,100 m above sea level and is known for its grasslands, pine forests, tea plantations and hills.
On arrival
Check in and relax.
Depending on arrival time:

We didn’t replace Munnar because Munnar isn’t beautiful.

DAY 3 — VAGAMON
A whole day for the hills
This should not become a mad sightseeing checklist.
Morning
Vagamon Meadows
Spend some time walking and enjoying the landscape.
Continue towards
Pine Forest / Pine Valley
One of Vagamon’s most recognisable landscapes.
Later
Explore some of Vagamon’s cultural and scenic spots, depending on the group’s interests:
- Thangal Para
- Murugan Hill
- Kurisumala
- Kolahalamedu
Vagamon’s three hills — Thangal, Murugan and Kurisumala — are an important part of the area’s cultural character.
Optional adventure
For interested travellers and subject to weather/operator conditions:
Paragliding / adventure activities
Vagamon is an established destination for paragliding, trekking and other outdoor activities.
Return to the hotel.

DAY 4 — VAGAMON → THEKKADY
From meadows to the forest
After breakfast, check out and drive towards Thekkady.
This is primarily a scenic transfer day, so don’t overload it with sightseeing.
En route
Enjoy the changing landscape as the hills become more forested.
On reaching Thekkady:
- Check in
- Relax
- Explore the local market/spice shops
- Optional evening cultural experience
Depending on the group’s preference, you can include a Kathakali or Kalaripayattu performance in the evening.

DAY 5 — THEKKADY → KODAIKANAL
Crossing into Tamil Nadu
After breakfast, leave Thekkady for Kodaikanal.
This is another day where the road journey is part of the experience.
You move from the forests of Kerala into the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu.
Kodaikanal is around 7,200 ft above sea level and is known for its lake, wooded hills, waterfalls and misty viewpoints.
On arrival
Check in and relax.

- Local market
- Café / homemade chocolate stop

DAY 6 — KODAIKANAL
A full day in the Princess of Hills
Today is for actually experiencing Kodai rather than simply passing through.

Depending on weather and access:

- Pine Forest
- Silver Cascade
- Kodai Lake
- Local chocolate / fruit products
Kodaikanal offers boating, cycling around the lake, trekking and other outdoor experiences.

DAY 7 — KODAIKANAL → MADURAI
From misty hills to the heart of Tamil Nadu
After breakfast, check out and descend towards Madurai.
The official Madurai district information puts Kodaikanal approximately 120 km from Madurai by road.
After reaching Madurai and checking in:

Visit:
Meenakshi Amman Temple
Then explore the surrounding old-city area.
And this is where I would not make Madurai just a temple stop.
Madurai is deeply connected with Tamil culture, history, food and the city’s old trading traditions.

DAY 8 — MADURAI
One last taste of the South
Breakfast and check-out.
Depending on the flight timing, you can keep the morning relaxed or include a short local experience.

Transfer to Madurai Airport
Trip ends.
And importantly, Madurai Airport has a tourist information centre, so the airport is well integrated with the city’s tourism infrastructure.
